Job Description

As a Day Care Teacher your main duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Implement the Montessori philosophy;
  • Plan, prepare and organize the learning environment;
  • Develop and implement programs that support and promote the physical, cognitive, emotional and social development of children;
  • Lead activities by telling or reading stories, teaching songs and taking children to local points of interest, provide opportunities to express creativity through the media of art, dramatic play, music and physical activity;
  • Establish and carry out a daily activity schedule that incorporates child directed activity, care routines and transition times;
  • Supervise and manage children both inside and outside the school;
  • Create a fun and safe learning environment;
  • Meet the needs and interests of the children;
  • Promote independence in the children;
  • Guide and assist children in the development of proper eating, dressing and toilet habits,
  • Develop schedules and routines to ensure adequate physical activity, rest, and playtime;
  • Instruct children in activities designed to promote intellectual and creative growth;
  • Teach courteous behaviours and pro-social conflict resolution skills;
  • Observe children for signs of potential learning or behavioural problems and prepare reports for parents, guardians or supervisor;
  • Assess the abilities, interests and needs of children;
  • Communicate with parents on students' growth and progress;
  • Attend staff meetings to discuss progress and problems of children;
  • Assist in keeping records etc.


Qualifications and Skills:

  • College, CEGEP or other non-university certificate or diploma from a program of 1 year to 2 years
  • Montessori Early Childhood Teacher Certificate
  • 1 to less than 2 years of experience working with children
  • Valid Emergency First Aide & CPR Certificate
  • Criminal record check
  • Vulnerable sector check

Children's Ages: Infant (4 months onwards), 1 year, 2 years, 3 years, 4 years, 5 years

Work Setting: Before and after school programs, Day care centre or nursery school

Work Site Environment: Non-smoking
